Northwest 2A District 1st Round: Cedarcrest Red Wolves vs. Mountlake Terrace Hawks, Cedarcrest HS – These two teams met January 24 at Mountlake Terrace on the Hawks’ senior night, and CHS crashed the Mountlake party, beating them by 20. Rose Carlson led Cedarcrest that night with 11 points and Cassidy Sweney pitched in 10. Look for the sophomore and senior respectively to once again lead the way, but something to watch for both teams will be rust. Both teams have seen little to no practice time this week in light of the snow-related school closures, so that could be a factor early in this one. Whichever team comes out with momentum out of the gate first will be in the best position to win.

We like Cedarcrest here because of their strong defense; they limited Mountlake to nine first-quarter points last time out and that defense helped get things done at the end. Senior guard Trinity Prout and post Ishika Nayyar lead the Hawks. Again, as noted, we take Cedarcrest to move on, but when they next will play is anyone’s guess what with this weekend’s storm afoot. They’ll be headed north to Lynden for a tough one with the second-seed Lions, and it’s scheduled for Saturday afternoon. But the weather forecast for Lynden seems more fit to oufit Sweney, Carlson, Kat Townley, Sidra Griffin and the rest of the Red Wolves with skates, sticks, sweaters and shoulder pads and have them play some outdoor ice hockey as opposed to indoor shoes, jerseys and shorts more suited for hoops. So we’ll see when they get it in. Cedarcrest 50, Mountlake Terrace 35
